Hi all:
What is up with the change to mirrors.towbit.net for emerge downloads? I just
did a fresh install of Gentoo and must have lost a full day doing the
emerges. There were many times when emerge was unable to connect to
mirrors.towbit.net, path not found/or connection timed out. Also the download
speed was anywhere from 153 b/s to a blazing 8 k/s all of this with many
pauses with the downloads. This is not good and agrivates the long compile
times for a new install.

Corey:
One question is GENTOO_SOURCES located in /etc/make.conf? If it is then it is
not in the version that came with 1.4rc3 this one looks like the bottom half
of the last section is missing compared to others I have seen. If it is not
complete how do I get a more recent one? Thanks for your help.

IIRC, the new installation manual includes a step to run mirrorselect. As I
see it, either they set towbit.net as default to encourage people to use
mirrorselect, or perhaps you ran mirrorselect and it (foolishly?) chose
towbit.net as the "best" mirror.

At one point (1.4rc3?) twobit was set as the default mirror by accident.
Any recent stage shouldn't have that problem...

There is a somewhat new round robin DNS set for distfiles. Set the
first choice in your GENTOO_SOURCES to http://distfiles.gentoo.org/

The mirrors in this set are all high bandwidth mirrors. Any problems
please open up a bug to mirror-admin

Cheers!
