You need to remove it by hand

Hello,
I have eliminated hal long ago and noted recently in my group list that
I have a haldaemon group
haldaemon:x:104:haldaemon
and a user
haldaemon:x:102:104:added by portage for hal:/dev/null:/sbin/nologin
Should these have been eliminated or do I need to do it by hand or
something else still needs it?
Thanks,

I think you should do it by hand.
In general, you can assume portage will never delete any config files
or anything from /etc without your involvement (either manually or
with etc-update or similar).

I just had a look and noticed that haldaemon is added as a user to a load of
groups. The group 'cdrw' only has haldaemon as a user. What shall I do with
it?
# less /etc/group | grep haldaemon
disk:x:6:root,adm,haldaemon
floppy:x:11:root,haldaemon
cdrom:x:19:haldaemon,michael
cdrw:x:80:haldaemon
haldaemon:x:1004:haldaemon
plugdev:x:1005:haldaemon,michael

You should still delete it.

I assume you mean just the haldaemon, not the group cdrw, right?
Then I leave the cdrw empty with no users, correct?

Yes, just delete the user. It was created for hal to use and hal needed
membership in various groups to work properly, noticeably for things like
devices in /dev.

Thanks. Just deleted haldaemon group and user throughout the file.

Do any of the config tools, etc-update, dispatch-conf, cfg-update etc,
ever prompt for removing a redundant file? In my experience they only
'trigger' for changed content within existing configuration files?
