Well i subscribed to this list quite some time ago and after looking
around for quite a short time (so if I am indeed mis-informed from only
reading a few posts bear with me) doesnt the site at
http://www.aaronshi.com/gentoo/generic.html look a little bloated?
Thats what i liked about gentoo.org 's current site its simple and very
few images and no crazy things poking at you.. IMHO i kind of like
gentoo's current site :) That does look good and if it wasn't for it
looking bulky then i'd absolutly love it.. Or maybe bulky is alright i
really dont know but i figured i'd post my opinion not that its really
my business.

I disagree. It doesn't seem all the bloated at all. I'm on a dialup
connection right now, and the page loaded for me very quickly. I like
the sleek look of the site, and the simple, yet elagant layout.
Gentoo's current site is very utilitarian. I think that as the gentoo
project has progressed, while it is still a very utilitarian
distribution, it has started to recently gain a good deal of polish,
and slowly it's become quite elagant. Right now, everything is
becoming more flashy, and more eye-candy oriented. This isn't wrong;
keep in mind that most people like eye-candy. However, I personally
hate bloated eye-candy. (Try browsing hotmail on dialup, or even
msn.com) I think this new website is a good balance between the demand
for eye-candy and bloat. I honestly don't see a good deal of bloat on
that site. Sure, you could argue that you don't need all the fancy
graphics, but by that logic, all graphics could be seen as bloat.
Remember, text loads very fast ;).
So, my opinion is that the current design is very nice.
On a side note... what's the current progress level of the website
redesign? Need any help?

Yes, we are still in desperate need of layouts for additional Gentoo
website pages, which I call "Reference Pages":
- The 'More headlines' page
- A webpage (like /main/en/about.xml)
- A news page (/news/en/blabla.xml)
- A guide page (like /doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml)
- A printer-friendly guide page (like
/doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml?style=printable)
And that's just design. We'll need to think about the code afterwards,
making sure that it can be used on all sorts of html browsers, including
with large-font support (for the visually impaired people) as Xavier
pointed out.

I'm in the process of making a beta of guide.xsl and handbook.xsl. I
haven't touched handbook.xml yet but guide.xml is coming along nicely.
Aaron, we really need you to work on the layout. I'm not really a
designer so all I can do is copy your ideas. Please look at how the
pages are being rendered and give me some input. A tarball of all the
cleaned up pages and css you have would really help. These pages are
being served from my laptop using xeviers' gorg over dsl so be patient.
http://curtis119.no-ip.org/index.xml
http://curtis119.no-ip.org/main/en/where.xml
http://curtis119.no-ip.org/doc/en/index.xml
http://curtis119.no-ip.org/main/en/about.xml
http://curtis119.no-ip.org/main/en/contract.xml
Anything that is a guide or part of the handbook relies on the
handbook.xsl template so isn't in the new layout yet. I should get that
working sometime this week.
Comments? Suggestions?

Mind you that the XSL will probably need to be rethought of. We want to
make it less resource-hungry (less document() calls) and more modular.

Hi all,
Did anyone take a look at my solutions/comments in my previous email
regarding how to accomodate people who use giant fonts when viewing the
site? I tried to fit some design time into my schedule, but by the looks
of it I will not be able to work on it until May. In the meantime, I've
attached a rar containing all the latest files. It contains the normal
version and the experimental big-fonts-okay version (using css files in the
folder /css2). Please if someone want to take a stab at making it work
better with giant fonts go ahead by all means.
The index page currently has no print css.
The generic page is a good base for all the other pages still needed
(http://dev.gentoo.org/~swift/www-redesign/roadmap.xml), the print css can
be used for all the printable pages.
To see what the print css looks like, open up generic.html and hit print
preview in your browser (I still have not received response as to how it
looks in various other browsers compared to our reference browsers of
Firefox 1/IE 6).
If someone wants to start on the other pages, that wouldn't hurt. Most of
the formatting is probably already present in generic.html, just copy what
you need for each page from there. Some things that are definitely missing
are the formatting for command/code samples, etc. You should be working
with the sitelevel css file: gentoo.css; you should _not_ need to touch
anything in global.css. It's probably best to leave the bigfontok (css2
folder) stuff alone for now until we get some better bearings on the issue.
Michael: I tried viewing your pages several times but only got a page cannot
be found. I know your site worked before, but not lately. =(
An update on the image permissions, I've obtained written permission for the
following image.

Still waiting on the last two.

The site's been down for past couple of weeks, I think the admin is probably
too busy fixing the site rather than looking into my inquiries.

Aaaron thanks, what you have is a great place for me to start. I can
work on this steadily until May when you get the time. Hopefully I can
have a good first or second working draft of the entire site up and
running by then for us to tweak into shape.
Sorry my site was down. I restarted that box (kernel upgrade) and
forgot to restart gorg. I have it in my local.start now. If anyone gets
an error please let me know, thanks.
