Looking into the structure of our gentoo-overlay, I asked myself why we
have a production directory.  It seems to be redundant.  When something
becomes stable enough to be usable, it gets placed in the main gentoo
tree.  So what is the production directory used for?

Nothing at the moment. It's there Just In Case (TM).
