Hi,

I finally got my kernel rebuilt with support for the AMDGPU. Now my hp laptop can finally talk to the HDMI port and lighten the screen up to a readable. I really started to like it. Then my system started hanging.

Actually, the very first time I brought up X with the new kernel, it also went into that mode, but I hoped it was only a fluke. But it still does it, eventually.

Mostly it happens when I'm in VirtualBox, but I don't think only then.

My touchpad seems to work - if a bit jerky - after it enters the hang mode.
My bluetooth mouse hardly moves. Clicks don't work. Entering a virtual terminal doesn't work.

Has anyone else experienced this, or known of changes made to correct it?

I've had the same issues. On recent kernels like 4.17.17 it isn't too
bad, but sometimes it will hang on boot or on shutdown. Hangs during
running aren't as common, but I've seen one or two. I'm hoping it
gets sorted out in future kernels.

I'm running upstream kernels so this isn't a Gentoo issue.

Thank you for the feedback. You have have a total hang but for mouse movements, is that correct?

uname -r says:

  4.9.76-gentoo-r1

Is that the kernel version? I wonder if I should try to get a newer kernel from gentoo...

I wonder if anyone at gentoo could supply a maillist URL from the people doing AMDGPU?

I have a similar problem with my machine. Ever since >=4.17.something
I've had the mouse and keyboard stop working in X randomly, and usually
reconnecting them fixes it, the glaring difference is my GPU is Nvidia.

I noticed the system was not really hanging because one hang I tried
doing a magic sysrq reisub and the keyboard did not respond. Could it be
the same issue?

One thing I forgot to mention: it's only happened so far, when I've been using my HDMI monitor. It never occurred in the 3/4 year before that, before I compiled with the AMDGPU facility.

Thank you so much for your mention of the magik sysreq key and reisub. I didn't know about those. Now I have the courage to use my HDMI monitor again.

Oh, on the other hand, I just got a roccat keyboard. I wonder if its driver can be hanging the system - X seems to know it personally.
