All of a sudden, when I go to a page with a Java application,
mozilla-firefox crashes. Run from a terminal, this message is shown:
peter@mars ~/.mozilla $ firefox
No running windows found
java_vm process: could not find Java VM symbols
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not read ack from child process
System error?:: No such file or directory
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (255)
peter@mars ~/.mozilla $ set |grep -i ^j
JAVAC=/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.10/bin/javac
JAVA_HOME=/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.10
JDK_HOME=/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.10

Latest version installed: 1.0.7-r2

I notice that all the 1.0.7 versions of firefox are masked too.
When I do about:plugins in firefox, the entire Java applet shows as
enabled.
(from about:plugins)
Java(TM) Plug-in 1.4.2_10-b03
File name: libjavaplugin_oji.so
Java(TM) Plug-in 1.4.2_10
followed by all active mimetypes.
I did not update firefox or java recently. Although I did update to gcc
3.4.5 from 3.4.4.
I am sure it's something minor, but before I waste time recompiling,
downloading etc, perhaps there's a notice I missed somewhere?
Any guidance appreciated. TIA

According to this thread, some users solved this problem by re-emerging
their preferred Java. I did, and now it works.
mars ~ # java-config -cjoOv
/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.10/bin/javac
/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.10/bin/jar
/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.10
java version "1.4.2_10"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_10-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_10-b03, mixed mode)
Prior to the re-emerge, the JRE was not found. The last two lines above
showed ERROR.
Don't exactly know why this occurred, but at least I'm back running again.
Any reason why all the Firefox ebuilds are masked?
