[gentoo-user] How to set up claws mail

[Peter Humphrey]

Hello list,

I'm trying to ditch KMail and switch to mail-client/claws-mail, but I can't 
see how to set it up to receive emails from my ISP. It appears to run, but 
it doesn't fetch anything. Even KMail can do that ;-)

The claws log shows me logging in, then out again without doing anything.

Can anyone offer the clueless a clue, please?

Hi Peter,

There is no much information to understand what exactly you tried
already.
I use claws-mail for a few years now, have no issues, it's a great
mail client, but whenever I want to start fresh I do go around all
settings (general) and account and tweak things, so I don't remember
what defaults are.

Take a look at "Configuration > Preferences" under  "Mail Handlig >
Receiving" in "Automatic checking" section "Check for new mail on
start-up" is set (if you want this) (interval checking if you
want that as well).

Also take a look at "Configuration > Edit Accounts" then select your
account and "Edit", under "Account > Receive" is "'Get Mail' checks for
new messages on this account" set.

the Configuration dialogues and put values in.

Could it be your mail provider is using OAUTH2 like Gmail does?  If so you 
will need to tweak Google's (your ISP's) security settings to allow non-OAuth 
authentication mechanisms, or look into obtaining an OAuth token and use this 
instead of your normal login passwd.

I'm somewhat thin on the details, but if this is the cause of your problem the 
interwebs should provide steps to help with the particulars.

I don't think that can be it, because there's no sign of authentication 
failure in the log. This is the whole log of an attempt to fetch mail:

In the response to the STAT command, the server says there is no mail.

What is it that you expect claws to do when there is no mail?

I was a claws user once but now it's a distant memory.

Is there something else on your system that checks for new mail, like a
notifier pop-up or an icon in your DE?  If so, it is possible that this
makes the mail appear "old" to POP, and that claws is interested (maybe
by default) only in new mail.

Let's start again.

I waited until this morning, used webmail to check that the ISP had emails 
for me (20 in fact) and tried Get Mail in claws again.

After doing so, claws.log now shows one conversation, exactly the same as 
above. So webmail shows 20 emails for me and the claws conversation shows 
none.

That is my problem: I must have something wrong in my claws setup. Sorry 
about my vagueness before.

My ISP doesn't allow emails to remain on their server after being read. You 
could say that my fetching of emails is a transfer operation, not a copy.

Grant asked about a trace of KMail's conversation with the server. I found a 
Log Activities plugin and activated it, but I can't find a log file. I 
didn't restart the program, though, so I'll try again when more emails have 
arrived in the ISP's queue.

just worked. Then I looked at your screenshot and see you are using a
different host.

I thought the mail host names all resolved to the same host; they always
have in the past.

I deleted ~/.claws-mail and the mail folder and started again. It worked
for me too this time - Just Like That (tm). I'm using claws now. The next
thing is to work out how to use filters.

I didn't look at that, I just copied the info from my getmail config.

Ah yes, the filters in Claws are very powerful but not so intuitive. Look
at actions too, I do most of my filtering server side, but I couldn't do
without Actions.

This shows you have 13 messages totaling 198,521 Bytes

This doesn't look correct to me.  I would expect to see a list containing each 
message followed by its unique ID, e.g.:

1 00WBw418fblah
2 foo:hdPYR
...
13 whateverswO
.

as per RFC1939 at least.

Also missing is the RETR command, which will retrieve a numbered message and 
the DELE command which will mark the message(s) to be deleted when the client 
quits the session.

I can't answer this, other than by saying the above log entries do not display 
a complete transaction sequence I would expect to see between a client and a 
POP3 server.  In the first instance I suggest you use openssl s_client to 
login on a terminal and fire the various commands at the server to see its 
responses.  As long as the server does not error out, run RSET to unmark any 
messages so they are not deleted and QUIT.

Then try again with Claws, increasing the log verbosity to see what you get.  
It may be the POP3 server implementation is incompatible with the Claws 
client, although in 2017 when POP3 would be deemed mature at best, if not 
technologically obsolete, this seems unlikely.

Disclaimer 2:  I've stopped using telnet to troubleshoot POP3 servers or read 
my emails for even more years than that.  :-)

That did it; I now have all the messages. But now claws is refusing to
filter them into the folder they're supposed to go in. I must be missing
something in the filter definition.

Grr... How did I manage to do that? I'm beginning to think I'm seeing what
