www-client/firefox got updated this morning to 45.2.0, and now it segfaults
whenever you enter a character in the search field or the URL field.
Anybody else see this sort of behavior?

Same behavior with 47.0.1. Starting 47 in "safe mode" avoids the
problem, but starting 47 in normal mode with all extensions disabled
still crashes.
I downgraded to 38.8, and everyting works fine again.
I guess I'll stick with 38.8.
Or maybe it's time to switch to Chrome. :/

I have this reaction every time Mozilla gives me this kind of
"upgrade". But then I think about the implications:
- No Request Policy type of extension (AFAIK)
- I don't know if I can search with DDG by default, instead of Google
- I don't know if Chrome has even the meagre keyboard interface FF has
- I don't know (in fact I doubt it strongly) if I can disable
"webfonts" with Chrome as I still can (fingers crossed) with FF
and many others.
I guess when FF finaly becomes intolerable I'll switch to lynx or w3m :-P

I run firefox 47.0.1 and don't have that kind of problem.
Though to solve this you could try a few things :
- rebuild firefox (if you built it, instead of using the binary one) with
-ggdb CFLAG and debug USE flag, and then run it under gdb.
Then you could try to reproduce the segfault, and gdb would tell you where
it crashed (even the source files and guilty lines), and push that to
Mozilla's bugzilla and/or package maintainer to get a patch in the meantime
- at least just try to reproduce the bug, and file it to Mozilla / package
maintainer to get them to reproduce it and fix it
- or simply downgrade to the previous version. :)
Chrome hasn't the faintest customisation firefox grants us thanks to its
XML-JS-CSS UI Structure, and the quantity of modules is simply incredible
(plus it's not Google behind, that can't be anything but a plus).

You can, Chromium has a large number of search engines available -
including b.g.o.

I don't know what FF's keyboard interface is like, but I'd call
Chromium's fairly meagre, certainly not as good as Konqueror's.

Instead of not trying it based on what you don't know about it, why not
just install it and try for yourself? Chromium is a big build, taking
longer than any other package I have installed, but Chrome is a binary
package so should install very quickly.

Never happened to me, I'm going though versions as they appear in
unstable, on 47.0.0 currently. Haven't had this sort of a problem with
Firefox in years.
Have you considered turning core dumps on to get a backtrace and either
try to narrow down the issue (to some library or such) or submit a bug
report? Possibly build Firefox with debug symbols to see more
information from the core dump. Howtos are laying around the webs, it's
not too hard... If you're up for it and need more pointers let me know.

Are you running all of these test with the build-from-source
www-client/firefox ebuild? I used to do that but after not being able to
track down the cause of some weird font-related graphics glitches, I
settled for the binary www-client/firefox-bin package and haven't had
problems since. I always run ~amd64 firefox-bin, currently at 47 and have
no problems whatsoever.
Definitely recommend you try that before going for chrome.

Do you have a custom fontconfig setup, either with a modified /etc/fonts
or with ~/.fonts.conf ?

Yes, the crashes were all with the standard build-from-source ebuild.
I installed firefox-bin (45.2) and it seems to work fine. :/

Nope. Not that I'm aware of.
I'll use firefox-bin for now. In a few months I may try building from
source again.

And 48.0
firefox-bin 45.3.0 works fine, as does firefox-38.8.
Still need to try building with debug symbols...

Did you enable custom-cflags or custom-optimization in the use flags?
Firefox doesn't work well with it. Also, using system libs instead of
the bundled libs may add to stability problems.
