I cannot find a standalone program or script to post a prepared message
(already in RFC 822 format) to a NNTP server. I had a working python
script to do this (which is trivial except for SSL and authentication,
because python has NNTP support in its standard library). But for
various reasons I'm trying to minimize my python dependencies.

(I'd have asked this in comp.unix.networking, but there is an egg &
chicken problem :P )

I suppose you could have used the python script to ask this question in comp.unix.networking, intending to switch after you get a good answer.

I actually did what you seek to do from DR-DOS 7.03, even worked from OS/2 Warp 4, with UKA_PPP but that was long ago. Now I can't even find UKA_PPP on the internet, only nonworking links.

I think what you want to do is comparable to what I do in mail with msmtp (to send) and mpop (to download by POP3).

I don't have Gentoo portage in front of me but have NetBSD pkgsrc (pkgsrc.org) and FreeBSD ports (https://www.freebsd.org/ports/index.html), each of which has a news category.

This is a listing of FreeBSD ports news category:

I just use thunderbird to post to nntp, assuming you have access to the nntp
server, just configure thunderbird or many any advance email program may
have that ability, to post to an nntp server.

I should have made it more clear that I meant a command line, pipe
friendly, Unix toolkit bit.

There are such tools for SMTP (swaks if nothing else). Why not for
NNTP? Why does news posting apparently require a huge monolithic "app"?

Because you haven't written it yet? ;)

Have you looked at inews? The man page is a bit vague, but its
configuration file has a spot to configure an NNTP server.

It doesn't.

But what/where/how is inews? There's no inews package in gentoo.
Also:

 [5+0]~$ e-file /usr/bin/inews

In fact I have, see the OP. I just cannot believe I was the first one
there.

For now, I have rewritten it in python 3 which addresses my underlying
problem of future proofing my systems against python changes. It turned
out to be easier than I had feared, in fact I could simplify it big time
because the NNTP module in python 3 is better. And it's definitely
easier than to continue the hunt for a non-existent (on gentoo at least)
packaged solution.

I thought it was part of inn, but I may be wrong:

  https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/net-nntp/inn

You might be able to get slrn or tin do what you want, but it's not
obvious how from their man pages...

All of the news server packages used to come with command line posting
utilities. But they usually posted to the local server and not to a
remote NNTP server. But, I haven't run a news server in 20+ years...
