The best design ever! So nice and readable font, so yummy
background, very fast page load.

Many thanks for Web project team for hard work!

As for the Phase II, are there any plans for 8" floppy support or
only 5.25" devices are targeted?

Best regards,
Andrew Savchenko

I hope you followed the links there to the new team websites. :-)

Really cool the new website. Finally a modern website that's
technologically up-to-date. And it's so much faster now. I can hardly
see it loading anymore. :-D

It did not load from the first try for me.

Than it take some time to load from the second attempt.

A really awful blue background.

The quote from the site:

“We accept that members in more fortunate circumstances may feel
that a site with a 16-colour palette and an optimal screen resolution
of 640 x 200 pixels is not the best fit for their needs but we urge
such members to keep the greater good in mind. The vast majority of
potential new Gentoo Linux users are still using IBM XT computers,
storing their information on 5.25-inch floppy disks and communicating
via dial-up BBS,” said Roy Bamford (neddyseagoon), a Foundation trustee.

Oh, my God! I really hope that it is the 1 April joke.

"The second phase of the project to get Gentoo Linux to a wider user
base will involve the creation of floppy disk sets containing a compact
version of the operating system and a selection of software essentials.
It is estimated that sets could be created using less than 700 disks
each and sponsorship is currently being sought."

Well, probably, it is.

Did you notice "The new site is also available via Gopher."?

With Gentoo on board they're probably looking at a doubling of the
available gopher servers.

It worked the first time but it is quite a bit slower for me. I got DSL
now and other pages, even those with pics, load faster. Sort of odd.
Glad it isn't just me.

Slow drawing speed (not loading) is part of the CGA spec.

Me too.

I was just trying to remember the type number of the serial consoles we
used. No joy so far, but then it was 30 years ago.

But punched can survive an EMP, which is more likely here as I don't
anticipate an invasion of domesticated rodents (I'd have typed guinea
pigs but I can't spell it).

Actually, I've just been looking at the spoof site again. Someone has put an
awful lot of work into it (I suspect Nighthawk). It'd be a pity if were all
thrown away after today.

An absolutely magnificent effort - well done, team!

I like it but it was slow to load. Maybe it will settle out soon.

I think I started on a Wyse 50 terminal. Heck, at one point, the main
server had a 25MHz CPU even. Dang I'm getting old. o_O

Dang it ... I see another "get off the grass" thread...

wyse terminals, vt100's, lovely green or amber screens - those were the
days! What was I saying about grass?

That's the idea - to resemble those old serial terminals.

Bill reminds me that we used vt100 terminals, and later vt220. We thought
the gold phosphor was the latest thing in chic at the time.

How can I play the great new game on the site? Firefox just tries to search the page when I press A or Q? Am I using an unsupported browser? Should I try WorldWideWeb-browser? Is it in portage?

In Firefox go to "Settings -> Advanced" and turn off "Start searching
while typing".

(Translated from the German version by a non-native speaker, so it can
actually be named differently in the English version.)

I think it only runs on Mosaic and IE1.

More seriously, Firefox may be eating your key presses. I found it works
well on Chromium, but now Google know how crap I am at Pong.

Well, let's not forget about having the word "login:" burned into the
screen too. Me, I always turned mine off when I left for the day.
Everyone else tho, they could see their login prompt all the time, just
in a slightly different color. o_-

Oh, I usually fixed the keyboards after someone spilled Dr Pepper on
them too. Start off with water, hot if possible, then move up to 99%
alcohol. Once that is done, place the keyboard on the A/C condenser
outside and let the heat and fans dry it. Since they regularly were
blowing 150F air, it doesn't take long.

I'm getting to old. :-(

Eeh, it is no longer available, I mean the first version.

Do anyone think we can ask for permanent link to old version?

Except there was the time that IT told everbody to _stop_ turning
their terminals off at night because the daily power cycling was
killing the power supplies in the terminals (VT220 and VT240, IIRC).

By that point, I think the terminals may have had a screen saving
feature...

Well, we was the service dept so that didn't matter much. It did matter
when we had to replace the whole terminal because the CRT was burnt.
Some folks were bad to leave theirs logged in which ruined pretty much
the whole screen. Some had to since logging out would also stop print
jobs. Not long before I left, they finally had a print spooler so that
logging off didn't matter. Long story.

Those were the days tho. lol
