Hello,

Well I just updated a laptop that had not been updated for
8 months.

It's all fine, except I cannot log in via the kde menu

ssh works fine and all packages are current.

Any suggestions on how to get this fixed?

James

You need to give a better description. By the KDE menu, do you mean the
kdm login screen? What happens when you try to log in, does it reject
your username/password, does it try to open a KDE desktop and then fall
back to kdm or does kdm not open a login screen in the first place? "I
cannot login" tells us nothing.

Before you reply, take a look for anything useful in /var/log/kdm.log.

Sorry, my psychic powers are not functioning today. You give nothing
to go on whatsoever. ;)

A quick stab in the dark - are you trying to log in as root? KDE will
not allow that (by default) for obvious security reasons.

I also had a "I cannot login" error with kdm-4.x, so I am still using
kdm-3.5 as display manager.

Ok, I do not know what it is called. I'm running kde-meta 4.3.3
It's the kde screen where you put your login and passwd.
It flashes for a second or 2, like the passwd is accepted, but
kde cannot start.

If I do not auto start kdm via rc-update, then I can log in as a user
and X starts (twm?).

I can also ssh into the system so the user passwd is ok.

Maybe a keyboard error? I have ran this several times:
emerge -D1 $(qlist -I -C x11-drivers)

No xorg.conf file in use:
x11-base/xorg-x11-7.4-r1
x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.5-r1
ati-driver-9.11
linux-2.6.31-gentoo-r5

Ideas?

It's called the kdm login manager (it is a Display Manager).

I suspect that you probably have fallen victim to the great conspiracy of
baselayout doing away with rc.conf and not screaming it LOUD ENOUGH to make
sure that we set up the XSESSION variable so that the appropriate windows
manager/DE is selected. See more here:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.user/224058

Yep, I suspect xdm is not calling the correct display manager.

I suggest that you create the file /etc/env.d/90xsession. Mine has this in
it:

XSESSION="fluxbox"

You should probably replace fluxbox with kdm. Also, I assume that you already
have:

DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"

in your /etc/conf.d/xdm file since TWM starts up.

As you can read in the thread I mention above there are other ways of making
sure that the correct display manager is called. You could try one of those
if things do not work out as expected.

HTH.

I read that thread, so I created the file
/etc/env.d/90xsession with the contents XSESSION="kdm"
(permissions 644)

rebooting the Display Manager starts up, but when I log
in looks like the passwd is accepted (still works via ssh)
but the Display Manager Login Screen just returns....?

Like I stated early, xorg.conf is empty, so maybe I need

OK, now you don't get the TWM window manager, but your KDE fails to start. :-(

Stating the obvious, this is not right. Now it's not that /etc/init.d/xdm
cannot find your Window Manager/DE, but something is wrong with X's
configuration and it crashes.

It might be that with your video card you *must* have an xorg.conf, although I
think that most cards will run with a basic /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-x11-
input.fdi

I have not seen the errors you are getting in your log before, but I noticed
libc.so.6 - have you run revdep-rebuild -p -i or revdep-rebuild -p -i --
library libc.so.6 just in case?

revdep-rebuild is clean!

emerge @preserved-rebuild -p

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

I've rebuilt these same packages over several times.
I think the @preserved-rebuild tool is bonkers....

ideas?

OK, xorg elog (I think) mentioned that you should copy the
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-x11-input.fdi into
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/ and customize it to your needs. Otherwise, knock up a
basic /etc/xorg.conf to get your Xorg going. I think that in all likelihood
this is the cause of your problem.

There's been a couple of threads in the last 3-4 months in this list
mentioning this problem. I am still on the old portage and therefore didn't
read them close enough to remember the suggested fix. Have a look and if you
can't find them then I will try to dig them out. BTW, does:

revdep-rebuild -p -i --library libc.so.6

also end up in a loop?

Are you rebuilding them with @preserved-rebuild or manually?

It's a good idea, and much better than the old "break it then fix it"
approach with revdep-rebuild, but it does get itself confused
occasionally.

I know I'm coming in half way here, but have you logged in using kdm or
just straight in via the cli?

i.e. the tool.....

Ok it's borked, what do I do?

I still think I need some minimalistic /etc/X/xorg.conf
with this dell laptop....

The kdm display manager will let me log in and start kde4.
I can ssh in or kill off xdm and log in on console just fine.

If I use the old org.conf file, it boot but the kdm login manager
app never starts and It does not allow login on console. It is
a dell laptop. I think the xorg.conf file needs work, but,
it's only a guess.

That sounds a good guess, what does the Xorg.log show?

Well KDE4 is working fine now.

dev-python/sip was the key. Somehow none of the updates(syncs) actually
updated it to the latest stable version (4.8.2) So
dev-python/PyQt4 and hence some of the kde-meta packages were borked.

A long journey. Caveat: Don't to 8 months without an update
(was I that hard headed in grad school)....?
too long ago to remember....
I use to tell everyone I was smart.

this one ate my lunch and then some.....

thanks to all that help...

James
