Hello Mike, Setting up a router, based on Gentoo, kind of goes
hand in hand with building a firewall. (Note you need a firewall
so you are in charge of how your bandwidth and network resources
are allocated. If you do not secure your router, some body else
will perform stealth admin task on your network and limited resource.
I suggest you read quite a lot of information, before making your
final decistion.
Here are some links, in no special order, that you will find
interesting:

http://www.iptablesrocks.org/
http://www.braingia.org/books/linuxfirewalls/

I hope you find these sites useful. One note. There
are many tools for securing your router/network.
ON your sytem you can:
# ls /usr/portage/net-firewall
to see a listing of packaged tools for securiting your system.
Then you can read about them, knowing that if you want
to install one of them and test drive the software, it's
only an emerge away.
HTH,
James
