Subject: [gentoo-user] logitech (phillips)quickcam 4000 pro driver?
Date: Tue, 7 Dec 2004 19:28:47 +0000 (UTC) [thread overview]
Message-ID: <loom.20041207T201941-609@post.gmane.org> (raw)
Hello,
I was trying to get this quickcam 4000 pro camera working, when I ran across
a disturbing webpage about linux support removed:
http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/
Basically, the pwc opensource part of the driver, has reduce quality and
frame rate, while the binary_only module pwcx is far greater in quality.
While I salute the kernel maintainers for requiring 100% sourcecode to get
the camera to work, it seems that others, such as the Sangoma Frame Relay
card I just purchased, pull the same trick. Yet, they have their module
as an option in the kernel, but you have to deactivate it and run their
little 'binary build' software to add to the kernel.
Can somebody explain what the hell is going on? I've notices lots of sourcecode
drivers dissapearing from the kernel, particualar old WAN interfaces cards.
Is there an inexpensive webcam that has 100% of the driver sourcecode out on
the opensource table? Is there a list where we can figure out who has opensourced
their drivers, so we know what to purchase?
Is their a work around for this (logitech(phillips) webcam 4000 pro) camera, or
do I just give it to a windoze_kid?
James
