Hello,

I've installed a LMLBT44 ntsc card from Linux Media Labs.
The instructions are for a 2.4 kernel, and look almost useless:
http://www.linuxmedialabs.com/LMLCD/LMLBT4x/DOC/

Beside with all of the change to video4linux (v4l) and the fact
that it requires bttv to be installed, and there is no package
for bttv (it's most likely been sucked into a new package/source),
I'd appreciated some guidance on how to get this card to do
some basic video streaming of the ntsc (black&white) frames to
a gentoo (kde) system....

lspci -v reveals:
0000:00:0f.1 Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture
(rev 11)
        Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 18
        Memory at ee800000 (32-bit, prefetchable)
        Capabilities: [44] Vital Product Data
        Capabilities: [4c] Power Management version 2

Any help/advise is greatly appreciated.

James

Perhaps it's the Conexant 2388xx (bt878) driver? In the 2.6 kernel
menuconfig -> Device drivers -> Multimedia devices -> Video For Linux -> Video for Linux

I've used the bt848 in the past via this type of config and it was functional.

Well I've tried with and without the menuconfig -> Device drivers ->
Multimedia devices -> Video For Linux -> Video for Linux ->
Conexant 2388x (bt878 successor) support

and I still get this error message upon building a new kernel:

 UPD     include/linux/compile.h
  CC      init/version.o
  LD      init/built-in.o
  LD      .tmp_vmlinux1
drivers/built-in.o(.text+0xb5ad8): In function `pvr_boot':
: undefined reference to `request_firmware'
drivers/built-in.o(.text+0xb5b52): In function `pvr_boot':
: undefined reference to `release_firmware'
make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1

I have search (from /usr/src/linux) for 'pvr' but I find
nothing. I had more errors but I nuked many choices
under Video4Linux and it seems to have clear up most problems
related to building a new kernel that supports the bt878
and bttv, which the LMLBT44 liturature says is needed (for 2.4 kernel
installs).

I also found this web page with the latest patch for bttv:
http://linux.bytesex.org/v4l2/bttv.html

but I'm not sure how to check if this patch has been applied to the
2.6.9.gentoo-r4 sources. If not, I'm not exactly sure how to
apply it. V4L seems to quite finicky......

I had to remove the bt848 selection and use the conextant replacement
Device Drivers  --->
Multimedia devices  --->
Video For Linux  --->
Conexant 2388x (bt878 successor) support

to get the new kernel (2.6.9-rc4) to compile.... otherwise a new kernel failed
to compile
