Weird. :) Just for future reference, the grub command line mode will let you change all kinds of things that will make it possible for you to boot from such a situation with very little effort. When you see the empty grub menu, hit tab to see the list of commands. Same for grub2, but the syntax is slightly different. Just as one example, type 'root' at the grub CLI prompt.
