Hi everyone
I am now forced to replace my epson printer.
Anyone think of a printer for which ink is quite cheap (contrary to the epson)
and that allow to have status not only in windows ?
Epson as an utility to have ink status in windows and linux, but I have my
printer on a server and was in hope some could have ink status iin cups ...
So, anyone that have a suggestion is welcome !

get a colour laser printer.
They are quite cheap. They are usually better supported - and toner does not
dry out.

I agree with Volker. The printer costs more but not buying ink cartridges is
like getting out prison :) You never want to go back again.

For my personal experience, I have yet to have a HP printer not work.
You can get the ink levels and such too. It has a GUI thingy for that
but I think it has a command line tool as well, in case it is hooked to
a server or something with no GUI.
The way I buy a printer, I find the cartridges first. Then I find a
printer that uses the cartridge. My current printer uses the 74XL and
75XL cartridge. Those are the high capacity ones. They print about 3
times the pages. I buy the generic ones and they are both cheaper and I
think they have more ink. They certainly last longer than the HP ones.
I did buy one set of HP XL ones since they were on sale locally.
If you can afford a laser printer up front, that is cheaper in the long
run, as others have already posted. Just keep the printer in a
relatively dry location. Read that as low humidity. If you have
humidity problems, turn it on and let it warm up a few times a week. I
did that at my friends business when the printers were in the basement.
Real humid in there. If left long enough, the print gets pretty bad.
Hope that helps. Lots of option.
Dale

Get an HP Inkjet printer and buy a cartridge refill kit from eBay for
about $10. Also, ink for about the same price. It's so damn cheap,
cheaper than laser. Go for laser if you want high speed printing.
Refilling voids warranty, but nothing happens to the printer. I've
been using refilled cartridges on my HP PSC 1410 for seven years now.

Is it just me? There is a bad GPG signature (maybe it is due to the
accent character(s)).
Anyway, IMO hplip is much nicer than mtink (there is the command-line
tool hp-level included that displays ink level), and HP ink don't dry
up if you leave the printer idle for 2 weeks, unlike Epson. Of course,
if you print a lot you should consider laser printer.

Anyway, I don't print so much, but I need one !
I don't know why you say I have a bad gpg. I think I put it on the gpg
servers, so It should be ok. Did you try to search for it ?

I despise all inkjets, but maybe that's just me.
I'd pick mono laser over any inkjet.
Many years ago, I worked with a Brother mono laser multifunction
printer and the "print" part worked fine with Linux. I don't think I
ever tried to set it up the scanning.

It's not.

That depends on your printing needs. I've now got an HP colour laser AIO
device. It was expensive but it does everything I need with minimal fuss.
The only point I'd make about HP AIO devices is that while the hplip
package is free and open source, to use it with a scanner it downloads a
non-free binary blob. Whether this matters depends on whether you are a
pragmatist or zealot ;-)

I had a similar device and it was a bitch to set up.

Here's my HP testimonial: I've had an HP LaserJet 1320 printer (mono)
for almost 15 years. It's brilliant: 1200DPI, Postscript, Duplexing.
It still works like it did when it was new.
I've had to by _one_ toner cartridge, it's still got many miles left
on it.
I don't print much, and the one Canon ink-jet printer I had before the
HP LaserJet had an operating cost of about $10/page. Yes, dollars.
Once every couple months, I'd need to print a few pages -- and I'd
have to by yet another new cartridge and thow out the 99% full one
that had stopped working.

If I cared about scanning, I'd be very tempted to spend enough money
to get a network-connected printer that just e-mails me a PDF document
or writes it to a network file server.

I had an inkjet but I didn't use it much, so every time I came to use it the
jets were blocked. Eventually the condition was terminal. I now use only my
trusty old Kyocera FS-1020D mono laser.

I think modern ink-jets are rather better.
The one we've got now seems okay - the very first one I've been any
where near happy with. It's not perfect, but the photos are better than
a laser, and my wife prints card which the laser printer chokes on.

Make sure you check the specs. Either it'll be expensive, or it probably
won't do it. My Dells have been the only printer/scanners I've had that
do it - HP's don't, Epsons don't ...

That feature definitely moves you from the "home" printer product
lines into the "office" printer product lines.

That's not correct. My HP laser AIO can scan to email, a network folder
or a USB stick.

I've seen printers advertised as scanning to email and network folders,
and it turns out you need to control it FROM THE COMPUTER. (I saw the
adverts, downloaded the manual, and there was no mention of doing from
the front panel, but copious explanation of how to use the computer
software.)
My Dell, you need the computer to configure it, but then everything is
controlled from the printer front panel.
Cheers,
Wol

Just downloaded an AIO manual (3050 series). It says the functionality
is Windows only, and needs to be configured using a Windows program.
Okay, that's probably bullshit, but ...
The Dell is programmed via its web interface, and will scan to any CIFS
share.
But as I say, I'm sure when I've investigated in the past, it's always
required software on the computer to do the scan or email - oh - the AIO
manual says they can scan TO AN EMAIL PROGRAM. They can't "scan to
email" as I understand it ... it sounds like it fires up Outlook or
whatever, and sticks the scan in as an attachment. It doesn't sound like
it will talk to an email server and send an email with the scan attached.
Cheers,
Wol

Bear in mind that I am not using adverts as my source of information but
the printer sitting next to my desk.

It's exactly the same with my HP. You don't even need a windows program
to configure it, although they do supply one, as the printer has a built
in web server for configuration. And if you plug in a USB stick it opens
a menu that includes an option to scan to the stick.

Maybe that's true of that model, but it's certainly not true of all HP
AIO devices.

As can my HP.

Then why does the configuration web interface ask for the mail server
details?
