Hello list,
Today I upgraded my kernel from 3.0.6 to 3.1.6 and promptly lost sound. This
motherboard has Intel HDA. All the required modules are loaded, and I hear a
thud as they're loaded, but alsaconf can't find the device.
I tried recompiling all the alsa drivers into the kernel instead of as
modules but it made no difference.
Has anyone a fix for this?

I think the first step for something like this is to run
/usr/bin/alsa-info to get some debugging detail.
In other news...So 3.1.6 just went stable for amd64. I wonder what's
special about that one that wasn't met by 3.0.{13|14} or 3.1.[0-5].

I just did a quick update on my wife's machine which also uses Intel
HDA and have sound in KDE so at least it's not a generic problem.
I guess you're going to need to provide some debug info. Maybe try a
complete power down and not just a warm boot. Not finding the device
at all is problematic. What's in lspci, etc.?
Post back with more info.

Power cycle complete - no difference. Switching back to kernel 3.0.6 I now
have no sound there either!
Lspci shows the device ok. Output of alsa-info attached.

Your ALSA stuff looks fine, by my eye. What happens when you run
"alsamixer"? "alsamixer -c0"?

Peter, according to your amixer output 'Master Front' is set to 0%. Maybe this is your problem?

Well spotted, both you and Michael. However, that's not /the/ problem.
Setting the master volume to 100% just gave me a faint hiss in the speakers;
no real sound, and no device detected by alsaconf.

I'm inclined to think you have something in your asoundrc (either
system-wide or user-local) that's shunting ALSA clients over to Pulse,
and that Pulse has a misconfiguration.
FWIW, alsaconf doesn't see my sound cards, either. Here's what I've got:
kaylee shortcircuit # lspci -k|grep -i -A2 audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 631xESB/632xESB High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 09)

Neither of those exists on my system.

/etc/pulse/daemon.conf hasn't changed since 8 Dec.

This is mine:

Definition Audio (rev 05)

You mentioned that switching back to the old kernel doesn't fix the
audio, but have you tried the old kernel since changing the volume
control? Another data point, at least.
If you still don't have sound using the old kernel, then I think the
problem must lie with some other recently updated package, no?
One other data point to compare:
$ls -l /dev/snd

What about per-user configuration? When I was running an unholy combo of
Pulse, 64-bit WINE and 32-bit Adobe flash around a year ago, I regularly
had quirks were Pulse would reset my ALSA master mixer to 0, and I'd
have to go through and adjust a few levels before things worked properly
again.
Anyway, what are you using to try to play audio? A Pulse client? An ALSA
client? It's hard to narrow down where the fault is without knowing the
path the data's trying to take.
I'd suggest using 'aplay' to try to play back some .wav files.

The BBC Radio 3 iPlayer, and of course the KDE start and stop sounds.
I've recompiled several packages today, in particular phonon, phonon-kde and
phonon-gstreamer. Sound has suddenly reappeared. So whatever the problem
was it seems to have been solved.
Incidentally, I had been having to keep turning the speaker volume control
up to hear anything, but this evening it's almost fully down.
I wish I understood all this, but thank you anyway, all those who've offered
help.

FWIW iwlagn is still broken in 3.1.6 (it broke in 3.1.5).
