You mentioned that switching back to the old kernel doesn't fix the
audio, but have you tried the old kernel since changing the volume
control? Another data point, at least.
If you still don't have sound using the old kernel, then I think the
problem must lie with some other recently updated package, no?
One other data point to compare:
