My favorite disk failure story:  I made a backup copy of my boot
sector with 'dd if=/dev/hda of=bootblock.bak bs=512 count=1'.

That disk started giving hardware read/write errors immediately
after that, and never again booted successfully.

I was afraid to use dd for at least a year :/
