Hi folks,

Anyone here have AT&T DSL?  Is there anything special software wise that
I need to get it to work or do I just point to the URL of the modem and
set it up that way? 

As some may know, I have been promised DSL for the past 5 years or so. 
It is supposed to be here next week.  They put the cards in the DSL box
today.  YEPPIE  !!!!  If I don't get DSL this time, my next post may be
from jail.  I'm going to drive my uninsured 3/4 ton pick up right over
their shiney new DSL box.  :-@

If your "modem" is connect by Ethernet, then it's probably a 
router/modem/switch combo device.  Those don't even need drivers.  You 
just go to its IP and configure it there and Linux will get internet 
access through Ethernet.

If it's a USB-only device, then it's a simple modem and you will have to 
pray there are Linux drivers for it.

I was told it would be a ethernet modem so sounds like I will be good to
go without to much trouble.  I messed with one of these things a long
time ago but I couldn't remember what I had to do to set it up.  I also
figured things may have changed since then too.  It was several years ago.

Thanks for the info.  I guess I don't need rp-pppoe for this to work.

Nothing is needed.  Only Ethernet support.  The configuration of the 
router itself mainly consists of entering your DSL account's username 
and password.  The device will then connect on its own (it has its own 
OS) and offer Internet access to any device connected to it through 
Ethernet.  You will need to configure your network in Linux though.  The 
easiest solution is to install net-misc/dhcpcd and set it up to 
automatically talk to the router using DHCP.  This happens in 
/etc/conf.d/net:

   modules="dhcpcd"
   config_eth0="dhcp"

Or you could install "wicd" instead if you prefer a GUI for the local 
network setup.

Been using Bellsouth which is now AT&T for the last 6 years. You should 
get a modem from them, I have a Westell 6100;

It has two ways to use it Ethernet or usb, use Ethernet and disable the usb.
Set up in bridge mode to a WRT54GL;

If you have a modem that runs in bridge mode rather than in
router/NAT-firewall mode, then make sure you have a firewall
between "you" and the modem.  Something like the above
mentioned WRT54GL works swimmingly (especially if you replace
the factory firmware with something like OpenWRT).

Do not connect your desktop machine directly to a bridge.

It's possible to harden a desktop such that it can be
more-or-less safely connected to a bridge, but if the OP had
that sort of expertise, he wouldn't have asked the question he
asked. ;)

No, everything goes through the WRT54GL, it is runnung DD-WRT v23 SP2.

I had thought about picking up a Linksys router and putting it between
my desktop and the modem.  Sort of add some more protection if you
will.  I also plan to change my root password.  Of course, my password
isn't as bad as some I have seen.  May need to disable any type of
remote access too.

root login is disabled by default.  Even if someone knew the password, 
login is impossible :)

Furthermore, right now you're accessing the internet without any form of 
protection anyway.  If you're with dial-up, that means you're connected 
directly to the internet.  And don't forget this is Linux, not Windows. 
  Even without a firewall, remote break-in is highly improbable, 
especially since you're not running any Apache or MySQL servers on your 
machine (at least I assume you don't.)

This is all good to know.  I would rather not have a router right now
since I don't want to spend the money for one.  If it is not needed,
I'll pass on that. 

Good to know that remote logins are not allowed for root at least.  I
don't think I have done anything to allow user logins either.  I don't
have ssh running since I have only one rig running right now.  I'm also
not running Apache or anything on here.  Just a desktop rig. 

It sounds like from what people are writing, all I have to do is enable
dhcp for my ethernet, hook up the modem, go to the URL to access the
modem/router then setup user name and password.  This is sort of what I
recall doing a long time ago.  I guess not much has changed.

I just synced and ran emerge -uvDNa world.  I think I am going to wait. 
142,529 kB over a 24K connection would take about 15 hours.  I think DSL
would be faster.  Heck, may be faster to wait anyway.  LOL

Well, as for over here, my ADSL line gives me about 2.5MB/s (named speed 
is 24mbit/s) download speed.  So I hope for your soon-to-have DSL to 
live long and prosper.  YouTube might change your life forever... or not :P

I have youtube blocked in my hosts file.  It ruins myspace and all the
other sites that people post youtube stuff too.  Heck, may get rid of
DirecTv next.  Just watch them over the internet.  lol   Well, I have to
watch the news tho.  I got to keep up with what all the politicians are
doing.

Almost certainly (at least in the US).  DSL modems with
Ethernet interfaces almost always are routers/firewalls (and
have been since way back when).  It used to be common for Cable
modems to be bridges, but that seems to be getting less 
common.

That's what I thought back when I was using dialup on a Linux
box that didn't have any servers running.  Then one day I got
root-kitted.

IMO, safely attaching a Linux machine directly to the Internet
takes a fair bit of skill and lot of diligence.  Safely
attaching a Windows machine directly to the Internet is at
least an order of magnitude more difficult.

I don't think I have seen a proper adsl modem for years now.  99% of them are 
modem+router combos or half-bridged routers.

Yes, most cable so called modems are half-bridged routers.

I think that both are exactly the same in terms of measures that need apply.  
A firewall and practicing safe-hex.

Of course the Linux machine has the added benefit that it should not be 
opening or listening on all sort of ports that you did not ask it to and as a 
rule in Linux you are not running a desktop and its applications logged in as 
root, but the basic premise of using a firewall is the same.

My wife and I have had AT&T DSL for a couple of years and we have the
our router plugged into the DSL modem and it works just fine.  I don't
know if it would if you had a PC plugged directly into the modem, but
with a router it works fine.

modem worked without or with.  Of course, without only one of us could
surf at a time.  ;-)

If it doesn't work, I can always pick up a router.  Newegg is just one
day away.

All you need is a switch, not a router.  However, most DSL "modems" are 
routers and have a built-in switch offering 4 Ethernet ports (usually). 
  If you need more, you just buy a switch and plug it in in one of the 
ports and connect the rest of the PCs to the switch.

I believe they use PPPoE, which most consumer-grade DSL/Cable routers
have built in support for. On your Gentoo box you wouldn't need to do
anything special, I don't think. Depending if you're using DHCP or
not.

That is what I was thinking too.  I still have dhcp installed from when
I was with my ex and her cable internet.  Sounds like I am pretty much
ready to go here.
