Has anyone been able to build sci-visualization/paraview either through
portage or outside portage? Currently I can't either way.

I just build paraview-5.8.1 using portage/emerge with no problems,
other than unmasking it and cgnslib and accepting the license. I'm
using gcc 10.2.0-r3, in case it matters. Are you getting any error
messages? You aren't likely to get much input without providing more
information.
