You can definitely do thi= s.  You can install gcc 3.4 which will give
you a libstdc++.so= .6 library, and then set the system compiler back to
3.3 with gcc-config= .  So you will continue to use=20 3.3 for building all
system updates, but you will have 3.4 installed as = well.
