I could not touch the files in /var/cache/edb/dep/usr/portage/net-misc/ but I could mv at an above level : mv /var/cache/edb/dep /var/cache/edb/dep_hopelessly_broken worked all right. I had not thought of this ; thanks for suggesting :-) And emerge --metadata worked now ! very happy ! I will try to fsck -f the offending filesys, now.
