I recently upgraded to 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 too and my splash also shows
up short after the "OK...." message, but this is also with my laptop,
which is equipped with a ati card (desktop pc is a nVidia PCX 5900).
My kdm works fine.
Did you remember to re-emerge nvidia-kernel?
