It really needs a reboot.  Bouncing alsasound doesn't do anything.  Then it works for a day or two or a reboot or two and then nothing.  Then I need to run
alsaconf and just hit enter for the defaults and reboot to get it back.  It doesn't take long and I can live with it, but it may indicate something else is wrong.
