Note that I started the gentoo boot disk, mounted it all, using the
folowing commands:

mount /dev/hdb3 /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
swapon /dev/hdb2
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev

and also chroot-ed it ...

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
