how come? How come nobody mentioned mpd? now that's lite and it has all one
could want(based on it's clients): command line interface, gtk, qt u name it
as for functionality as well pick a client based on what u want, now mpd
with sonata as client consumes less resources(not by far) than xmms did;
also sonata worked out of the box with my multimedia keys

I, at least, don't have much experience with it. Audacious was
mentioned a lot because its interface is very similar to XMMS's, and
it seems to accept a lot of the same skins and plug-ins. For people
explicitly looking for a replacement for XMMS because it's been
dropped from Portage, it seems to be the best choice.

Yai, well, mpd is awesome but I started to have problems with non
ASCII chars on filename like Múm [1]...they does not index and I dont
have any clue.. but anyway I did not tried to investigate a little more
about that..

Audacious is a good XMMS replacement which seems to need more development and
more users/bug reports.. and it just works. :)

I just read on the gentoo-dev list that xmms is about to be removed, but it's probably the only sound player that I've used. Could someone recommend a good alternative. I'm rather surprised that no one wanted to maintain the packages.

I found noatun heavy on resources compared to xmms and amarok requires more 
than a 17M sources download.  Meanwhile, I noticed that xmms is now a 
blocker!?  Why's that?

Thanks Bo,  I remember reading the first thread some time ago.  I guess it's 
time to move on.  Just emerge amarok and it looks great!  Tried to play a 
stream and it fell apart:

Plays OK for me.  Bring up the play list, click "Add->Radio Stream",
enter the URL.  The right click on the new radio stream, and do
"Load".  That should give you a "from live.str3am.com/"  in the play
list, click on it and hit play.

I recommend the use of the xine engine in amarok.  There are no real
plugins to speak of that you need, although I do have the following

Thanks Richard.  I think I have found a bug - or double-click doesn't always 
work as expected.  It seems that this is coming up as an intermittent error.  
Anyway, assuming that I have now played this stream and I would like to add 
it to one of my Playlists, how do I do that?

But it would be nice if Musicbrainz support was put back in. This was
removed because of security problems with tunepimp-4, but Amarok now
supports tunepimp-5 which addresses that.

audacious is a bmpx fork which is a xmms fork
you can try both

something about the app didn't suit my tastes. I've been use mpg123,
mplayer and mpd depending on what I want. Though apparently we should
be using amarok so I'll have to give that a whirl.

Anyway, I don't know if you know last.fm (you could take a look), but
Amarok's integration with that site is wonderful. You could (now could,
not should neither must) try dynamic reproduction list, rating,
taggin', etc...

I was a diehard XMMS fan. Then I noticed news about its imminent death, 
and I sadly looked for alternatives. I once did *hate* players like 
amaroK, but in its latest version is a killer app.

It just works, and works well. And simple features like instant search, 
wikipedia search and shuffling become rapidly interesting.

The only downside is a small memory leak that becomes noticeable after a 
few days.

I'd love an XMMS with amaroK features, or better an amaroK with a deep 
XMMS look-n-feel.

I second that. My search for the ultimate music player has stopped
with Amarok. Absolutely brilliant. Name a feature- lyrics? wikipedia
integration? It's got it.

Hi, I'm new to the list but have been lurking for a while... so forgive 
the slightly long post (bits of 'background' included to put things in 
context)

I tried to get on with Amarok - I tried on my Ubuntu install before I 
discovered Gentoo... thought I'd be bound to get it working with Gentoo 
but couldn't... and tried Rhythmbox in desperation to have something 
play music.

 From what I've seen of Amarok, I'd love it, but I every time I've 
installed it I've run into the same problems:

All our music (about 80 Gb, I think, mainly (but not all) OGG files) is 
stored on a server, accessed on a mounted Samba share.  The share would 
mount correctly - and I tried mounting it with a variety of permissions 
set - but I couldn't get Amarok to 'read' the music collection 
successfully.  I read various man/wiki/help pages which were supposed to 
get it working but I couldn't - and when Amarok bombed out it would take 
the system with it - things would lock up and I ended up have to reboot 
(!) and/or have major problems getting sound to work at all (it seemed 
to come and go, almost without reason).

I'm a relative newbie with linux and have only had my gentoo install up 
and running for about a month now... but I have managed to get most 
other things sorted by *lots* of reading/Googling.  I started off with 
kde, removed that (despite really giving KDE a really good go, I still 
wanted to go back to my Gnome comfort zone!) and installed gnome-light,  
unmasked the ~x86 packages that gnome-light pulled in and upgraded 
them... and sound works at last.  And Rhythmbox works - but I don't like 
it (never have).  I had xmms on my Ubuntu install... and had emerged it 
(now unmerged) to use with Gentoo... and would love to have a simple, 
working Amarok... but I haven't got my bravery together to embark on 
trying again!

I can't help thinking the problem lies with my (lack of) understanding 
of samba - our Squeezebox serves up the music from the samba share 
beautifully - so I'm not sure what I'm getting wrong in how I mount the 
share (mounting exactly the same way is fine for Rhythmbox) for Amarok 
to read.  Maybe I'll have another go one day soon!  If anyone has any 
hot tips or pointers that might help, I'd be grateful - I think I'll 
tear all my hair out if I try to emerge it again and end up with big 
problems with my system (I so want to avoid a problem that I'll be doing 
a full system backup before I have a go).

I wouldn't vote for rhythmbox.  I might try audacious instead.  But I'd 
really like a working amarok!

I had my music collection mounted over nfs and I ran into a similar
problem: amarok wouldn't be able to read the entire thing and the nfs
shares would stop working.

The problem turned out to be that amarok keeps all these files /open/
and the remote share runs out of resources.  I'm using audacious now
without problems.

Are you sure that Amarok keeps the files open? This would break even
on a local filesystem. I am currently listening to music via Amarok
and lsof shows only 1 audio file open - the one it is playing.

Do you still have xmms in your USE line in make.conf?  I had to remove
mine, and replace with -xmms, when the error you have came up.  Then I
had to do a emerge -Nuv world to recompile a few packages that the
change affected.

 2) it is not listed in package.use
 3) It is not listed in world

Not exactly.  It says no xmms, but the '*' also says the flag state
has changed since the last time you merged the package.

Kopete is a dependency of kde-meta, unmerge it and emerge world will
just try to pull it back in, along with its dependencies. You need to
re-emerge Kopete after removing xmms from your USE flags.

There are AFAIK two apps, Bluemote and BlueAmarok out there, I have used both. But I
think they have a fairly strong dependency on Sony Ericsson menu extensions.

It seems to me that audacious is functionally equivalent to xmms, down to 
having the same command-line controls. I'd try "ln -s /usr/bin/audacious 
/usr/bin/xmms" (after unmerging xmms and emerging audacious), and see if 
it all works.

It hasn't been supported for a long time. That said there is a new
maintainer who just took it over last week so don't give up totally on
alsaplayer. It was good for its day.

Again, I mentioned this before, but if your interest is file based
playback - no CDs - no streaming media - then there is hardly anything
better than Aqualung. It's in the proaudio overlay - both the release
versions and a CVS ebuild also.

it was great for testing dmix and hardware mixing - having 8 instances of 
alsaplayer playing the same song with ca 10 seconds difference.. without 
skips...

I think you want audacious, which seems to be xmms painted white and 
actively maintained.

I would second that.

I have not tried xine, but dislike the "size" of amarok. Audacious 
builds quickly and plays mp3s - and thats all I need!

Incidentally xmms and audacious both seem to sound cleaner than amarok too.

I emerged audacious last night.  I've been an xmms user since I started
using Linux back in 2003, so I wanted something xmms-like.  I like
audacious except for one tiny detail; the GUI window is tiny and I can't
seem to make it bigger.  Whenever I click the area that made xmms
bigger, it just tells me that DOUBLESIZE IS NOT SUPPORTED.  Will it be
in the future?
