i'm wondering if this has something to do with my server having xfree and
xorg. could someone point me to a guide for switching to xorg?

I've seen already them in internet and specifically to gentoo, in every
case it should be quite painless as
xorg is a fork of xfree (I'm mid sure), your old config files need only
to be renamed.
by the way gentoo xorg now don't use any more /usr/X11R6/ but /usr may
be a good idea make a simlink anyway

Your earlier post with the QT compile error -- it looks like you don't have
OpenGL installed. However, emerge should have known that before starting.
Also, emerge should have set your environment variable QTDIR.
Also, setting QTDIR should have worked to compile Link-n-log.
I think there's something hosed on your computer -- something like portage.
But I'm not sure where to look first. Maybe run 'emerge --info' and see
what it gives you.
