I apologize for the offtopic, but I think my question and especially its
answer would be of interest to other list members. I'm concerned about
this because I'll have to do something similar in the near future and I
don't want to break any laws.

Is it legal to do the following:

1) "emerge vmware-workstation"
2) build some images (within the 30 day trial period)
3) "emerge -C vmware-workstation" (within the 30 day trial period)
4) "emerge vmware-player" and use it to play the images created by
vmware-workstation

This question has been asked before so perhaps it would be easier to just read
the archives. I think you want to read this thread:

Totally legal and legit. Nothing in the licence prevents such use. Although
doing it multiple times may breach some parts of the licence.

You don't need vmware-workstation to build vmware images for vmware player.
Sites like http://www.easyvmx.com/ can do it for you within seconds.

Thanks for your answers, guys!

Bo, you are right (as usual) - I should have searched before asking, but
since it's an OT it never crossed my mind that someone had already
posted this question here.

Raymond, thank you very much for pointing this site out. I think it
could come very useful.

Novensiles, thanks for the straight confirmation!

Everyone, have a nice weekend! :)

If you don't mond ~x86, you may also want to take a look at
app-emulation/vmware-server it's not a trial version and it will let you
create images.

That might be legal, but why don't you go the absolutely legal
way and use vmware-server instead of vmware-workstation?

Sorry about butting in here:
I hope I'm not just blind but:

Alexander, I didn't see a word of documentation in the server package
about how to create a virtual machine. The README says to use `product
documentaion' but offers no clue of how to start `product',

There seems an absolute dirth of information for anything other than
general settings one can make for a herd of vms.

In fact it isn't at all clear that one can build a virtual machine
with the server package.

I have no strong reason for choosing vmw-workstation. There are two
minor things that make me prefer it:

- I am familiar with vmw-workstation and I've never seen vmw-server
- VMW-Server is beta version and masked as testing package

If there were any legal issues with vmw-workstation I would use
vmw-server or try the site pointed by Mr. Raymond Lewis Rebbeck:

But with Workstation, you do?

Aha. It's not?

There's no difference (as far as the interface is concerned).

It is not.

That might be.
