Indeed, it the daemon should be running in order to the sound to work (did in my case), see if there is an option for a more verbose output or something like that.

I just tried that with no success.  Do I need to be running it or
anything?  'cause starting it with the init script is failing with a [ !! ]
and there's nothing in /var/log/messages.
