Bogomips seems to be veeeery simple, because it takes the current frequency= =20 into account. So the number will be low when your PC idles and very high=20 when you compile something. The =E2=80=9Cbogo=E2=80=9D stands for bogus for= a reason. =46rom Wikipedia [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BogoMips]: =E2=80=9CIt is not usable for performance comparisons among different CPUs.= =E2=80=9D > So, I guess that number no longer means much.=C2=A0 So, I went > digging on the site you linked to.=C2=A0 I found this but not sure what to > make of it.=C2=A0 > https://openbenchmarking.org/vs/Processor/AMD+Ryzen+9+5900X+12-Core,AMD+F= X-8350+Eight-Core >=20 > Some tests, my CPU is faster.=C2=A0 Most, the new one is faster. Your CPU is not faster at any of them. Look at the label at the top of each= =20 graph; for some tests, lower is better (as in =E2=80=9Ctime taken for a tas= k=E2=80=9D). For instance, the GnuPG test for encrypting a 2 GB file takes 11.6 seconds= =20 on the Ryzen, and 19.4 on your CPU. The test is single-threaded, so for thi= s=20 kind of task, you can expect around a =E2=85=94 increase in performance per= core (or=20 rather, thread). OTOH, the m-queens 1.2 test is multi-threaded and you get= =20 39 s vs 238 s, meaning over 5 times more performance. Probably at lower=20 electricity draw. > I'm trying to figure if I'd be better in the > long run to buy that expensive CPU or pick one of the cheaper ones you > mentioned.=C2=A0 I started off with a 4 core on current rig and went to 8 > core and slightly higher frequency.=C2=A0 Money wise it was pretty painle= ss.=C2=A0 > I could do that again with new rig. Of course, only you can answer that in the end. Write down what you need an= d=20 what you care about. Weigh those factors. Then decide. Raw CPU power,=20 electricity bill, heat budget (cooling, noise, dust), the =E2=80=9Cnew and = shiny=E2=80=9D=20 factor (like DDR5), and price. As I mentioned earlier, the 7xxx-X series ar= e=20 hotheads. But when run with a lower power budget, they are very efficient= =20 (which is basically what the non-X do). Compiles will speed up no matter what CPU you choose. But where else do you= =20 need compute power? Video transcodes can be done in the background, and=20 there is also a limit to what parallelisation can achieve. Encryption is=20 also a non-issue for you. Even my 10 year old i3 in the NAS can encrypt ove= r=20 1 GB per second, IIRC. --=20 Gr=C3=BC=C3=9Fe | Greetings | Qapla=E2=80=99 Please do not share anything from, with or about me on any social network.
