[gentoo-user] selecting OS in Grub

[gentoo-user] selecting OS in Grub

[Jorge Almeida]

I'm unable to select which OS to boot at the grub screen, because the up
and down keys simply stopped working, so it always boots the default.
This never happened before. I already re-emerged and re-installed grub.
The arrow keys work normally otherwise, both in X and in a VC, including
in a curses screen.

Any idea?

Are you using a USB keyboard? If so then ensure that the BIOS is set
to handle it.

No. And the hardware is not new, nor is this a fresh install. I just

Good tip. Actually, the keyboard was connected to the mouse socket.
Consequence of a short cable + bad visual access to the back of the box
+ USB mouse.
Would you believe that even so it works, except for the grub screen?

PS/2 ports are actually kind of cool.  I beleive you could also get a
PS/2 splitter to use, say, a mouse and keyboard on just one port.   USB
kind of replaced it (windows refuses to hotswap mice, for example, and
my techie windows-poweruser roommate insists that he's never been able
to hotplug keyboards either, unless they were attached when the
computer booted, although i'm almost positive he's wrong) and is
supported a lot better, but - no surprise - linux is flexible.

Sorry, if I get this wrong. This is about PS/2-Ports, right?
Well your roommate is right then, PS/2 is not hotpluggable. Neither the 
protocol nor the plugs are designed for this kind of use. It sometimes works, 
but there is always the danger, your computer gets damaged.

well, i definitely hotswap keyboards all the time and i've never once
had a problem, even in windows.  I guess mice have to be plugged in at
boot to work, I can't use them after booting if they weren't.
Kebyoards however work fine, even if they weren't plugged in when the
computer booted.  I didn't test it for windows.

That's an eye-opener. I've always hotswapped my PS2 mice and keyboards (with 
no problems).

I have to add this, I have seen people do this and it caused damage to
the controller chip.  Even after rebooting everything would work fine
except the keyboard or mouse port that was swapped.  I have had this to
happen to me twice.  The first time I learned not to do it, the second
time the cable snagged and got unplugged by accident.  I hated to throw
that mobo away so I made a server out of it and use ssh now.  ;-)

You may have been lucky so far but I would be more careful if you like
the mobo you have.  Better safe than sorry.
