[gentoo-user] Looking for a pre-compiled Linux distribution

Hi,

I'd like to recommend a Linux distribution to someone who needs an as  
simple Linux distribution as possible.
Since I am going to help that person from time to time, it should be as  
similar as possible to Gentoo.

Which distribution would you recommend.

Arch Linux is similar. Just imagine you have "emerge", except there's 
only binary packages. When you install it initially, you're left on the 
command line with nothing installed except base packages, much like Gentoo.

And as an alternative to that, Artix is based on Arch/Manjaro, leaves you
with a desktop after install, and uses openrc which you might be used to
from gentoo.

How close is Slackware to that description?

If you want a minimal distro that has everything you could want, but is
easy to install and maintain, Slackware probably fits the bill (a Slack
live CD is my preferred tool in my toolkit for recovering broken systems :-)

I'd say not close at all. Slackware uses pretty outdated software and is 
not rolling release.

Arch Linux on the other hand, like Gentoo, does not have releases. You 
install it once and the upgrades are pretty much identical to Gentoo.

I think that I will recommend Void Linux to you.

The reasons are as follows :
1. rolling release as Gentoo and Arch.
2. use runit as init system.
3. Its package manager, xbps, is easy and quick to install/update/remove
software.

I used to use Arch on one of my PC's but switched to Artix (by way of  
Manjaro) when Arch stopped supporting openrc.  If you are OK with  
systemd, the Arch is good.  If you want openrc, then Artix is probably  
one of the few choices remaining.  It still seems fairly young - I had  
some issues with the initial install (or conversion from Manjaro) but  
if you can figure out emerge issues, you can figure out pacman (their  
package manager) issues, and there is a much better choice of graphic  
package managers, which might be good for the person who will primarily  
be using the system.

One other choice to consider is Linux Mint with Cinnamon.  Something  
different from the others, but pretty easy to use.  The OP hasen't said  
if he has a definite preference for DE.  While Arch and Artix probably  
both support Cinnamon (I have not explicitly checked), Mint does NOT  
provide KDE any longer (a relatively recent change.)

"simple" has multiple meanings.

For at least one possible meaning, I recommend devuan.
