I don't think that's the problem here:

  root: root> modprobe -l
  ...
  /lib/modules/2.6.14-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko


Don't know if it's relevant to 2.6.14 but there was an issue with 2.6.13 and
the nvidia drivers:
