I think what Volker is _trying_ to get at is that maybe ext4 isn't compiled into your kernel, because maybe the options have changed in the kernel's .config files between vanilla-2.6.28 and gentoo- sources-2.6.29-5. The error message you see might well be consistent with attempting to mount the volume using the ext3 driver. Suggest you post the .config file against which you built your new kernel. Stroller.
