Could it have been this thread: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.user/202559 I think there were some warnings there against it, but IIRC I didn't find them terribly specific or compelling, so 'emerge -1 `eix -Iu -- only-names`' works here. I would think your need for this would be rare, however, and you should be sure to run revdep-rebuild afterwards. Stroller.
