There are also some GUI utilities that are probably easier to use. Honestly, it may be easier to hack your player, depending upon the model. The majority of cheap Chinese DVD players sold in supermarkets are unlocked by pressing a few buttons on their remotes (eg. menu, 1, 2, 3, 4, eject), the code easily found on the net by searching Google (for "model number region unlock" or "model number region free").
