I am still curious what is the mechanism that causes icons to "appear" on the "desktop" of popular GUIs. I suspect the answer involves the magic of policykit/consolekit/dbus/hal/gvfs/gnome-vfs/fuse/hotplug/udisks/etc. Thank you, Chris
