You can use qemu-kvm whether or not you have a kernel/CPU with KVM support:

$ cat /usr/bin/kvm
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 --enable-kvm "$@"

But I was under the impression you can only use -enable-kvm if you have KVM built into the kernel/load the module.
