If alsamixer or kmix were muted, I wouldn't be able to play and hear CD's in kaffeine, which I can. You might also use euse to find the status of the 'cdda' USE flag and which installed packages are affected by its presence or absence. (Pretty sure I remember this being mentioned by someone before, but still worth looking at again) cdda is one of my GLOBAL use flags so, anything that needs it should have it compiled in automatically.
