Well, with 8Gb RAM, i recommend use tmpfs on PORTAGE_TMPDIR, just while
u are compiling anything.
Or even with 6Gb too.

I have 16 GB, with 8GB for $PORTAGE_TMPDIR on tmpfs. There were issues with= some packages having not enough space, so I have this in /etc/portage/pack= age.env:

app-office/libreoffice =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0notmpfs.conf
dev-java/icedtea =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0notmpfs.conf
games-fps/alienarena =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0notmpfs.conf
games-fps/worldofpadman =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 notmpfs.conf
games-sports/vdrift =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 notmpfs.conf
mail-client/thunderbird =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 notmpfs.conf
www-client/firefox =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0notmpfs.conf

/etc/portage/env.d/notmpfs.conf has this entry, changing PORTAGE_TMP= DIR to real HDD space:

PORTAGE_TMPDIR=3D/var/portage/tmp

Most of these packages compile with 8 GB of space, but not with parallel me= rges, like when Thunderbird and Firefox are both being built at the same ti= me.

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 Alex

Ok Ale= x and Luis,

So i put :
PORTAGE_TMPDIR=3D= "tmpfs" in /etc/make.conf
PORTAGE_TMPDIR=3D/var/tmp/por= tage (on HDD) in /etc/portage/env
in /etc/portage/package.env :
app-office/libreoffice no= tmpfs.conf
mail-client/thunderbird notmpfs.conf
www-cli= ent/firefox notmpfs.conf

Thanks to both of y= ou :-)

Regards
