I recently had mouse/keyboard fail to work in X, despite drivers being
rebuilt, and the solution for me was to put this in my Xorg.conf file:

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "AutoAddDevices" "true"
        Option "AutoEnableDevices" "true"
EndSection
