Can grub's device.map use them? I believe grub uses its own partition scheme (hd(0,0)), so fstab should not matter to it unless you use the root=3D option. But even with the root=3D option, grub can understand labels, and so grub2 (I'm using it with labels right now). LILO I don't know, I haven't used it in years.
