I noticed to day that Plasma 5 is now stable, which means I will soon have to
deal with it. I run a number of boxen with Gentoo on them. Some of them do
not run a full KDE desktop, only selected KDE apps, some KDE meta packages
including kdepim-meta.
For these boxen I have set:
[3] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop *
and USE=kde, -gnome in make.conf. What would you recommend I do if I still do
not wish to install or run the full KDE desktop environment? Are there any
gotchas?

Hello Mick,
kdepim applications have been not ported to Plasma 5 yet. You will not have
problem with those.
Some applications migrated are: ark, dolphin, gwenview, kate, konsole,
kwrite, telepathy, konversation, marble and most of games and educational
applications.

I'd use the KDE profile. The packages you install are still the ones you
want but the profile means the USE flags are already as you need, and you
can always tweak any you want different anyway.

Reading eselect news I thought that the KDE profile and kde USE flag is due to
be withdrawn with Plasma 5 going stable, did I get this wrong?

Yes Marc, some libraries are ready, but not the applications.

I just noticed, one box is set at:
[11] default/linux/amd64/13.0/no-multilib *
Is this a reinstall exercise?

Usually yes, but there is a work-around:
Create a temporary chroot with a non-no-multilib installation.
Use that to create binary packages.
Then change the profile of the main installation to a non-no-multilib profile
Using the packages created in the chroot, do an "emerge -e @world"
That worked for me. (Found this in a blogposting somewhere)

I saw that too, and it cast a gloom over the rest of my day. I intend to stick
with KDE-4 until some more sensible themes become available in Plasma 5, so I
hope someone will be keeping an archive of KDE-4 somewhere, as in the earlier
case of KDE 3 -> 4.
Last time I searched for Plasma 5 themes (or design methods, in case I might
be able to create my own) I came up empty handed. My objection to the
available one is that it's just ugly: acres of wasted space everywhere, and
great blocks of solid colour, some of which are actually buttons without
looking like them. Nothing subtle or sophisticated about it at all.
If anyone can point me to a better theme I'll be grateful.

You could try the following:
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/ocd-plasma5-theme?content=175772
I am not fully convinced, but then again, I quite like "Breeze Dark" with
"Air" so far. But still looking for a really nice one. (My design skills are
non-existent)

It's all a bit flat and boring, at least for a desktop. However, I wouldn't
be surprised if the target audience is MSWindows users with Surface tablets.
What other reason would KDE devs have to imitate the aesthetic shift from
Windows 7 to Windows 10?

The KDE 4 themes are still included. (Oxygen and Air.) Breeze is the
default though.

Yes! I noticed that soon after KDE4 started having a blue shade on its window
borders, so did e17. Perhaps coding and innovation in creative design don't
go hand in hand. :p

While both Plasma 4 and even Qt 4 are end-of-life upstream, I don't
think they're going anywhere quite yet. There's no pressing need to
remove it yet, and there's still a long way to go in terms of porting in
the Qt ecosystem in general.
When it is eventually removed, I also don't see any reason why Qt 4 and
KDE 4 can't go to the kde-sunset overlay along with 3.
Kind regards,
Michael

What I loved about Gentoo in the olden days was that it was one of the very
few distros that still kept KDE3 in its normal repos for a long time, while
many other popular binary distros jumped on the band wagon as early as 4.1,
when it was barely usable and full of trivial bugs.
We even had the choice of installing both KDE3 and 4 at the same time. That
made transition far easier and it allowed me to get settled in due time. So
I'm not particularly worried about the next few months, especially with the
modularity and interchangeability of today's KDE components.
Thank you for that, devs and maintainers. Good night.

You cannot install KDE5 without uninstalling KDE4.
I was told this is an upstream decision, not Gentoo's fault.

Partially true.
It's plasma 4 and 5 that cannot co-exist, not KDE

Yeah, KDE. ;-)
I mean common, when people say KDE, they mean the desktop, not kcalc or
koffice or kmail.

hmmmm, not convinced, "you know what I mean" doesn't cut it. This list
is largely populated with high-clue people who understand the meaning of
words and know that plasma != KDE
Around here, KDE usually means kde-apps and plasma means plasma.
We also know that firefox is not gekco and all sorts of other "you know
what I actually mean" opportunities to trip up

+1
Until version 5, KDE was fairly monolithic (though the the Gentoo devs
always did a nice job of breaking it up so that it didn't seem that
way). With the restructuring of the KDE project across the board, I
think it's important to distinguish between Frameworks, Plasma, and
Applications. If anyone just says "KDE 5", I think they mean all of it.
