My system's totally b0rked, it seems...

emerge -av =sys-kernel/hardened-sources-2.6.39-r8

Resulted in:

/usr/lib64/portage/bin/misc-functions.sh: line 978:
/var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/hardened-sources-2.6.39-r8/.die_hooks: No
space left on device
Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "/usr/lib64/portage/bin/ebuild-ipc.py", line 273, in ebuild_ipc_main
    return ebuild_ipc.communicate(args)
  File "/usr/lib64/portage/bin/ebuild-ipc.py", line 63, in communicate
    lock_obj = portage.locks.lockfile(self.ipc_lock_file, unlinkfile=True)
  File "/usr/lib64/portage/pym/portage/locks.py", line 73, in lockfile
    myfd = os.open(lockfilename, os.O_CREAT|os.O_RDWR, 0o660)
  File "/usr/lib64/portage/pym/portage/__init__.py", line 215, in __call__
    rval = self._func(*wrapped_args, **wrapped_kwargs)
OSError: [Errno 28] No space left on device:
'/var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/hardened-sources-2.6.39-r8/.ipc_lock'

But `df -h` shows:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs          3.9G  2.6G  1.1G  72% /
/dev/root       3.9G  2.6G  1.1G  72% /

udev             10M  128K  9.9M   2% /dev
shm             249M     0  249M   0% /dev/shm

I give up. I'm going to blast this system and reinstall from scratch, using -r8
