Note that the path is the etc directory in the eventual install. You get the make.conf file set up and then chroot. The guide is correct. mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf That's not to say that it couldn't be done after the chroot. It possibly could. I've never done it that way though.
