I just happened to run into a situation where rsync would have been
really handy to have on board while booting a minimal install iso.

I was surprised to find rsync was not amongst the onboard tools.

Isn't rsync a pretty basic tool to be missing from a bootable install
disc?

I realize I can make my own, or even just emerge rsync for the
duration but still it seems that rsync should be there....?

Just a suggestion of course but what do others think about it?

I have missed it as well a few times ... so I also would vote for having
it onboard per default.

The goal of the minimal install CDs is to make them small. I don't know how large they are now, but there used to be debate (regularly, IIRC, on gentoo-dev) about including vi or vim. I think at that time the minimal CD was down to about 22meg, and there was no way vim would be included due to its "excessive" size (I think with deps it maybe ran to as much as 40meg).

I haven't used Gentoo's install CDs in years. I think there may have even been a period during which they weren't produced or supported. If I'm installing a Gentoo system I now always use SystemRescueCD. I would imagine that would have rsync on it.

Stroller.

I grabbed the weekly minimal install and stage3.
The install disc was 111mb. I'm not sure what the motivation is
about smallness. Is the difference between 111 and say 155 really
much of a factor?

I see tools like tr cut yes and many others that although useful tools
probably aren't that important in an install cd. Especially one that
is supposed to be minimal.

I fully agree and `SystemRescueCD' is exactly what I ended up
using.... still failed to get a working gentoo vm though. Why is it
such a bitch to install gentoo into a guest vm?

Hi Harry,
You've said this a couple of times that Gentoo in a VM isn't
working for you. I think you should start a thread specifically about
that.

As for Gentoo installs, IMHO, they are in a bit of a mess right
now. Last weekend a friend decided to give Linux a try and I helped
him install Gentoo. The tarballs still, after nearly a month I think,
didn't include all the required /dev stuff in the stage3 tarball which
caused the machine to not boot. Maybe that's what you're seeing? I
don't know because I haven't seen a real writeup on what the problem
is.

Anyway, be sure that Gentoo does run in a guest VM.

Cheers,
Mark

While we're at it...

I'll vote for `joe`.

And `tmux`.

I'm at the stage right now of trying to boot from the vm harddrive.
What is missing from stage3? Maybe I can get it straightened out now
before turning the vm on its own.

Yes, it's a trivial fix (everything's trivial if you know how to do it :)

The /dev directory (before udev starts) is missing the /dev/console
device -- or maybe it's the /dev/null device. Crap, I can't recall
just now but I fixed the problem a week or two ago by using mknod to
create the missing device (I think it was /dev/console).

Just chroot into your fresh vm and see what's missing from the /dev
directory. Use mknod to create the missing device.

/dev/console and /dev/null are there.

Not sure how to tell what is missing if anything... comparing to my
running desktop there are herds of devs missing....

But now that I tried booting, I think I'm missing some kind of driver
from the kernel build... boot is not able to find my root on sda3.
And has a kernel panic.

I remember having a heck of a time about scuzy drivers last time too.
A couple years ago

I didn't think to get the right wording before rebooting into
SystemRescueCD and am now chrooted into the vm again.

I cannot remember what scsi kernel items to set.
I don't think it buslogic .. I did go back and rebuild that into the
kernel... but still no go.

and still not sure about devs missing either.

When building the kernel:
I took the config.gz off the minimal install iso as a template for my
kernel build. Then turned off some of the more obvious unnecessary
gunk. I either turned off something that needs to be on, or just
missing a module that I'm not finding.

Since the hdd is registering as sda rather than hda... I think that
may be what needs something scsi related to be built into the kernel
or as module.

/dev/null and /dev/console

Look at this post. Check the instructions near the bottom from kswtch
as I can confirm they work. The only catch is if your work created a
normal file under /dev then erase before creating the new device
files:

https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/gentoo-87/booting-stops-after-kernel-starts-883031/

It was a unique failure I hadn't seen before.

There was another method reported to fix this that had to do with a
file system called 'devtmpfs' that creates what's needed on the fly (I
guess) but I didn't think I was the person to try that out.

Hope this helps,
Mark

Actually, both.

The stage3 tarball I had (approx. 2 weeks old) has /dev/null, but it's
a *normal* file.

Just do:

rm -f $root/dev/{null,console}
mknod $root/dev/console c 5 1
mknod $root/dev/null c 1 3

$root is either blank if you've chroot-ed into /mnt/gentoo, or
/mnt/gentoo if you haven't

(The numbers you can see by doing `ls -l -a /dev` *before* chroot-ing)

Sorry. Forgot to stress one thing as posted in the previously-posted
LQ thread (Post #8 by ToK):

DO NOT mount /dev into /mnt/gentoo/dev when you do the rm+(2*mknod)
above. When you `ls /mnt/gentoo/dev`, you should see only the 'null'
and 'console' special character devices, and no other devices.

umount it, if you have to. Cast the above spells, then re-mount. *Then* chroot.

Reboot the VM into System Rescue Cd and run lspci -k to see which
controller you have and which driver it uses.

If you use envelopes, why not encryption ?

Mark is that guest running in vmware or something else than Virtual Box.

The guest that uses that kernel is running in Virtualbox-4.0.8.

The host is a Gentoo64-bit system, 98% stable, 2% ~amd64.

Haa... good idea and I once knew to do that too. But that was before
the truly `macro' senility set in ...

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440FX - 82441FX PMC [Natoma] (rev 02)
00:01.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82371SB PIIX3 ISA [Natoma/Triton II]
00:01.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Graphics Adapter
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
00:04.0 System peripheral: InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Guest Service
00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
00:06.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Intrepid USB
00:07.0 Bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 08)
00:0d.0 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI Controller (rev 02)

Seemed to have been the PIIX4 item and now I seem to have gotten the
drivers that I needed but now the bootup freezes just after finding
the drives.

Something about write protecting kernel text and read-only data.
Then another odd one:

atkbd serio0: Spurious NAK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be
  trying to access hardware directly.

I've never seen those message before. A tail of boot messages posted
here: www.jtan.com/~reader/vu2/disp.cgi

I thought it was stuck at the `Write protect' lines, but after a hefty
wait the last line appeared (quoted above). And now does appear to be
truly stuck.

Full kernel config here:

Sorry about my brain deadedness, but when I click on that thing in
windows 7 with Virtual Box installed... nothing knows how to open it.

Trying it another way round I try importing it from a running Virtual
Box Manager. When I open the directory containing `base_dist.vmdk'
nothing is visible in the VB import dialog screen.

The file ending that vbox uses is *.vbox so trying a quick rename but
Vbox does not recognize the file you posted.

I think we're not communicating then. The file I sent you was
/usr/src/linux.config in the VM. It's not a file that VB would run,
but rather a kernel config you might use to build a kernel to make
your VM boot. That of course assumes that the hardware model you built
in VB matches mine. I renamed the file thinking you'd want to keep it
referenced to me. you'd need to name it back to .config, put it in
your /usr/src/linux, possibly run make oldconfig, and then check the
file. If all that worked out you'd build the kernel as normal.

If you want a specific VB file from my install let me know exactly
which one and I can forward a copy of that.

- Mark

Egad... I wasn't far off about brain dead. I got mixed up with
another fellow who posted an appliance. I'm really sorry. And thanks
for the config... I'll try it with a kernel build shortly.

OK, trying the build now... with minor changes.. nothing that should
effect booting.

The boot process does get a little farther but comes to a halt at

  Switching to clock source tsc

And there it has sat for some time now. Apparently is not going to continue.

That EXACT symptom was EXACTLY what we saw on new hardware when we
didn't have the /dev/null, /dev/console issue because they were
missing from the recent tarballs. I actually had some photos that
showed it but cannot find them. Probably deleted at this point. Here's
a;link to the LKML thread and eventually Paul Hartman's pointer to
what fixed it:

https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/6/16/918

Please consider reviewing the links I sent earlier about the 10 or so
steps required to get them into the VM correctly.

To verify, boot the VM with the install CD, mount the partitions and
just look at /dev. Is everything REALLY there?

If /dev/null and /dev/console are there, and are special dev files and
not just regular files, then make sure you are starting udev
explicitly in rc-update.

I am copying the post so you can go through them without worrying that
you didn't find the post I'm talking about.

HTH,
Mark

[QUOTE]

I have the exact same problem as described in post #3.

As this is not my first gentoo install, I also noticed that the
English manual does not yet reflect the baselayout2/OpenRC changes.

/dev isn't populated so booting with grub "init=/sbin/init 3" doesn't
do anything. Well, except for printing out the following.
Code:

/dev/initctl: No such file or directory

Here is how to fix the problem described in post #3:
(The problem being missing device nodes in /dev before /dev is mounted)

Boot from a LiveCD and chroot into your system.
Create the needed device nodes with the following commands.
Code:

cd ~
mkdir test
mount --bind / test
cd test/dev
mknod -m 660 console c 5 1
mknod -m 660 null c 1 3
cd ../..
umount test
rmdir test

(taken from http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/udev-guide.xml)

OpenRC does not start udev by default at system startup. Make sure it
is started at boot:
Code:

rc-update add udev sysinit

First, thanks for going well beyond the call of duty and showing the
patience of Job.

Those files are there already and have been all along.

But anyway I rm'ed them and followed the steps resulting in:

(From chrooted shell)

root@sysresccd /dev % ls -l console null
crw-rw---- 1 root root 5, 1 Jun 26 17:33 console
crw-rw---- 1 root root 1, 3 Jun 26 17:33 null

rc-update |grep udev
     udev | sysinit
udev-postmount | default

------- --------- ---=--- --------- --------

You may not have noticed that 2.6.38-r3 where your config came from is
no longer available in portage... I used -r4 first time but now
redoing it all I'm using your config but on 2.6.39-r1. Since I can't
get the exact one you used I may as well get the latest.

So to summarize... I've used a version I bastardized, of your config, on
a different kernel version... maybe not the smartest way to go...

I've recreated /dev/console and /dev/null using the steps you quoted.

I notice on a reboot of the install media and chrooting into gentoo,
that /dev/console now has 600 permissions even though I gave it 660.
And /dev/null now has 666 although I gave it 660.

  cd /dev

  ls -l console null
  crw------- 1 root root 5, 1 Jun 26 13:02 console
  crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 Jun 26 13:02 null

Not sure if that is normal...but I think it is, anyway building the
kernel now and we'll soon see how it works.

........

OK, well nothing better happens on this go around.

Boot still hangs up at `Switching to clocklsource tsc

What is so aggravating is that building a guest from debian works
first try.. no problems. I guess I'll have to relearn apt-get and
other debian tricks if I want to get going on the reason I'm building
a linux guest. I run gentoo on my main desktop but there, installs are
usually trouble free.

Seems like it should be just as easy with a vbox guest too since the
hardware is kept pretty simple, but it never has been any
time I've tried it, which has been quite a few over the years.

I keep hoping it will work and try again some mnths later ... but it
never has yet.

If I want to get a tarsnap server in place (The reason I'm building a
guest) anytime soon I will have to drop gentoo as guest I'm afraid.

I may fool with it a bit more... but it's pretty discouraging.

When you chroot to the install root, you normally bind mount dev first,
so I would expect those files to be there. Are they there before you
chroot or bind mount anything?

OK, so that's good.

I'm very curious - did you happen to try appending something like

init=/sbin/init 1

to the boot kernel command and seeing what happens? That might be
instructive about where it's really getting to or what is stopping it
from proceeding.

OK, you caught me. I've now updated to 2.6.39-gentoo-r2:

mark@GentooVBVM ~ $ uname -a
Linux GentooVBVM 2.6.39-gentoo-r2 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Jun 26 12:22:10

To do the update I took the config I sent you, accepted all the
changes with the defaults, and built the kernel. No problem here. (I'm
actually writing this from within the VM itself using Firefox.

As Neil noted, the instructions for fixing this stated not to mount
/dev before chrooting into the Gentoo build. You probably did that
correctly, but it's important as you moight be seeing something
provided by the boot environment and not something you really created.

<SNIP>

When we had this problem I did some reading, as I'm sure you have
also. Don't get overly fixated on that message. According to a number
of threads I read the message is the proper result of a change in how
the clock is getting set up. It's spawned earlier on and the messages
print when the asynchronous process completes. Sometimes it prints
earlier, sometimes it's the last message, but in our case it wasn't
the real cause of the problem.

The real end of the process, as far as it had gone, was that the
kernel loaded, released memory and then just stopped.

<SNIP>

Sorry for the problems. Report back on the init=/sbin/init 1 thing.
I'm interested.

Cheers,
Mark

No... and I'm now getting it that they should be.

Anyway, I'm downloading the latest stage3 I found (06/14) I'll explode
it in a test directory and see whats there. I've emerged so much
stuff now on the one I been working on that I hate to bugger it up if
there is much chance of salvaging it. All those kernel builds left
lots of time for emerging all my pet stuff.

ok, a freshly exploded stage3 from 06/14 shows only null being an
un-bound /dev/ and its a plain file
 # ls -l
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jun 14 13:08 null

So now I've got them in place BEFORE binding to the install media
/dev.

ls -l /mnt/gentoo/dev

No, haven't done that yet. In fact with /dev/console and dev/null
created in an un-bound /dev as sharp eyed Neil pointed out, I can now
get farther in the boot process.

However, now I'm running into many other problems and still no boot.
many tty could not be accessed but then on reboot with SystemRescueCD
again, I see they were generated into /dev/ but are not character
files.

There was some kind of problem with fsck and at least 2 other
problems something to do with urandom and another I lost track of.

At this point, I'm going to scrap the guest as by now I don't know if
I'm coming or going with this thing. Boot process has written junk
into dev/, I've written junk into dev/ so I'm starting clean.

I've downloaded a new stg3, new snapshot of portage so I'm going to
try with all untampered with stuff.

I guess I am to create /dev/null and /dev/console again as per
instructions (that is, in an un-bound /mnt/gentoo/dev/)

(Is it normal to find `null' created as a regular file in dev/ (before
any tampering?)

Install vim, eix, reiserfsprogs, rsyslog, grub and gentoo-sources.
Build the kernel, then see what happens. (using your config again)

If it doesn't boot I'll boot to single mode as you requested and see
what I see.

All you have to do is create the null and console nodes using the mknod
commands given earlier in this thread. They have to be in dev on the root
filesystem of the install as the are needed before udev is run to
mount /dev/dynamically.

Mark, I rm'ed all of it and created a new vm again. did all the
steps with /dev and the rest of normal install.

This time around the vm cannot find any media to boot from although I
created boot and all that with grub etc.

I even added the `init 1' line you suggested... but since the media is
not found when I try to boot into the vm... of course it does nothing.

So, enough time wasted.. I'm sorry to cave on you when you asked for a
result of the init 1 parameter....

I don't have any idea where to look for the problem of not finding the
media but probably some kind of pilot error.

I need to get some work done with a vm so going with debian.

Its working now... tarsnap server is ready to be setup for tarsnap.
Done it about 1/2 hour.

I really appreciate your kind patience.. and have kept the thread for
next time I get the urge to create a gentoo vm. Very good input and
it does not go to waste since I seem to end up trying a gentoo vm
guest every few mnths.

Thanks to Neil as well. Always appreciate the sharp eyed comments.

As a follow-up to your problems, and because I'm just plain interested
in this /dev/null,console question, I decided to create a completely
new Gentoo VM myself from scratch this morning. I'm going FAR more
slowly than usual as, like you, I need to get other things done. Also
that I'd like to understand what the tarball does actually provide,
and also when everything in /dev really comes together correctly. (If
indeed it does come together correctly.)

I'll post back how it's going. My first observation is that the stage3
tarball only provides /dev/null as a normal file and nothing else. I
would guess that this is incorrect as I would think that if the normal
file is there then the special file won't get created later. I've
never studied how the /dev directory gets created so this will be a
learning experience for me.

As for having to get some work done, I completely understand. Just
don't give up on us here in Gentoo land, be we real OR virtual...

Cheers,
Mark

Harry,
I got a few minutes this morning to finish the new Virtualbox VM
test install of Gentoo. It worked fine for me.

If you need any info about this let me know. Here's the main
points, the biggest being the use of DEVTMPFS in the kernel.

If you want the actual kernel config file get in touch off list.

Cheers,
Mark

   Notes:

1) I chose the PCNET-OCI II NIC and set it as bridged. 4 processors, 2GB memory

2) /etc/fstab:
tux-test ~ # cat /etc/fstab
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime 1 2
/dev/sda3 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro 0 0
tux-test ~ #

3) I added DEVTMPFS to the kernel config to get around the missing
/dev stuff in the current tarballs:

tux-test ~ # cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep CONFIG_DEVTMPFS
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT=y
tux-test ~ #

4) Interestingly, it boots even though I didn't add udev to sysinit:

tux-test ~ # rc-update show | sort
                 fsck | boot
                 mtab | boot
                 root | boot
                 sshd | default
                 swap | boot
                devfs | sysinit
                dmesg | sysinit
                local | default
               net.lo | boot
               procfs | boot
               sysctl | boot
              hwclock | boot
              keymaps | boot
              modules | boot
              urandom | boot
             bootmisc | boot
             hostname | boot
             mount-ro | shutdown
             net.eth0 | default
             netmount | default
            killprocs | shutdown
            savecache | shutdown
            syslog-ng | default
           localmount | boot
           vixie-cron | default
         termencoding | boot
       udev-postmount | default
tux-test ~ #

5) World file:

tux-test ~ # cat /var/lib/portage/world
app-admin/logrotate
app-admin/syslog-ng
app-portage/eix
sys-apps/mlocate
sys-apps/pciutils
sys-boot/grub-static
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources
sys-process/vixie-cron
tux-test ~ #

6) /etc/make.conf file which I stole from another machine. Some USE
flags do not make sense in this context but they didn't hurt the
build.

tux-test ~ # cat /etc/make.conf

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"

USE="gstreamer jpeg2k ssse3 vdpau xvmc -bluetooth -cups -ipv6"
MAKEOPTS="-j9"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org/ "
SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--with-bdeps y"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
VIDEO_CARDS="virtualbox"
ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel"
