In my box (~amd64, unmasked portage) emerge automagically slotted 1.2
and emerged 1.4 in slot 0. And everything seems to work and be happy.
revdep-rebuild finds nothing wrong. So maybe the easy fix is to
"emerge libpng:1.2"?
