AFAIR many years ago (in firefox 1.x days) Pango was already the cause
of many people's slowdowns, it was also slower the more fonts you had
installed on your system. Back then, you could disable Pango at
runtime by doing:
export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1
Maybe it still works.
