Many thanks, Michael and Mick.

It turned out that I had to write

modules="vboxdrv vboxnetflt vboxnetadp enhanceio enhanceio_lru  
enhanceio_fifo enhanceio_rand"

i.e. all modules in one string assignment to the variable 'modules'
